Backpacking |The Smoky Mountains

We’re back!

Adventuring off into the great outdoors for a weekend is always a highlight of the year for sure! Spending time with family away from the busyness of life, enjoying the beautiful peaceful surroundings of God’s incredible creation… wow! There are no words to accurately describe it.

Yes there were blisters on heels, and  icicles forming inside water bottles while we hiked in freezing weather. In the mornings and evenings we huddled together around the fire and talked about what it would feel like to be warm all the way through. We marched through mud holes and crossed rivers and streams… this is all part of the incredible adventure that backpacking is. And we had sooooooooo much fun!!

I’m in the process of slowly (in my spare time 😉 ) sorting through hundreds of pictures from our 3 days. We’ll be posting a few on the family blog at some point. But for now, here are a few favorites… 🙂

None of us have ever seen an elk… and there were tons of them in the field where we parked (by the trail head)! Apparently this is a popular area to come see the elk. There were signs everywhere, and information on them at the park entrance.

Mmmm… hot dogs and buns toasted over the fire. Sooooooo yummy! Doesn’t everything taste better around a campfire?!

The river by our campsite day 2 … it had snowed the first day, and we found icicles (some of them huge!) all around the river and waterfalls. We arrived earlier in the afternoon, and spent the remainder of the day taking pictures, crossing the river, and climbing upstream over logs and rocks.

One beautiful place!! Blessed to be here with my family. 🙂

    • Thank you Ana! The pictures were a group effort (between the 7 of us who went backpacking there were 3 cameras and 2 iPhones) so everyone contributed. We love taking pictures of the things we do as a family together – it makes for great memories to look back on later! I am hoping we will post more pictures on our family blog in the next little while!!

    • @ Mrs. Stevens,
🙂 Cold is right! FREEZING is a better word. I think the high was 30s and in the teens at night and early parts of the day. We had a little snow, and the water in our packs kept freezing (icicles) even while we were hiking during the day. At night was the hardest. It was soooo hard to leave the warm fire and go to bed!
